Choreography Block: How To Get Rid Of It

I don’t know about you, but a few months ago my brain was FRIED. I truly couldn’t have come up with another dance or concept if I tried. I was too exhausted and saturated from another successful, but busy year of dance. Now that a month has gone by and I’ve had time to decompress, I’m ready to start planning dances for the 2019-2020 season. If you’re in the same boat, I’ve come up with a list of ways to end choreographer’s block and get inspired for this coming year.

  1. Explore new music that is different from what you would normally pick.
  2. Go see dance performances to get inspired by other artists.
  3. Go see other Art, such as concerts, art exhibits, poetry slams, museums, and more.
  4. Go take a dance or movement class.
  5. Find poems or stories you would want to use as inspiration for choreography.
  6. Use the Shazam app when watching TV and movies to discover new songs you may want to use for choreography.
  7. Observe animals in their natural environment. They’re great inspiration for movement vocabulary and formations.
  8. Take a walk in nature. Draw or take pictures of beautiful colors and shapes that you can use later in the studio for stimulus.
  9. Use movement verb cards.Click here to learn more.
  10. Go through Dance ED Tips Instagram feed and blogs! We have a lot of ideas for you! ☺

I hope this blog post has helped get your juices flowing!

Happy teaching!
